But the worst outcome of unnecessary bathing is probably not physical but metaphysical -- i.e., when hyper-hygiene justifies in one's own mind (whether consciously or unconsciously) - the exclusion of "the unclean."

In India, the "untouchables" are considered "untouchable" because they are "unclean" - and therefore contaminating - and not just physically but metaphysically.
On the Indian subcontinent, the word "caste" is etymoboligally bound to the English word "chaste."
In short, "the good guys" are clean, and "the bad guys" are dirty-untouchable and to-be-avoided rather like plague.
