Follow-Up Discussion To Jonna Ivin's "I Know Why Poor Whites Chant Trump, Trump, Trump"

image.png

Thanks Marsh.

I love the LBJ vignette!

Surely something very "ominous and cloudy" is happening in these "United" States.

For three years in a row -- in fact, coterminous with Trump's "administration" -- we have witnessed a singular outcome to a phenomenon sociologists call "deaths of despair."

"Why Americans Are Dying from Despair," The New Yorker

It could be that I have an educator's bias, but I agree with Bertrand Russell when he says:

Then Russell's "raw refusal to think" (and study... or at least read) gets complicated by the following deep current of American history.

image.png

image.png

And then, the situation gets further complicated by "conservative" "Christianity" (which is neither). I cannot tell you the number times I've heard the "good Christian" argument, based on St. Paul's verse that "the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God," as if this verse - which describes Trump's worldly foolishness "to a T" -- is ALL they need to be as dumbf*ck stupid as they please. No wonder the etymological relationship between "Christian" and "cretin!" I'm all in favor of radicals becoming "fools for Christ." But when people who are well endowed with intelligence become "cretins for Christ," I have an issue. (That said, I must "put in a word" for cretins. ORIGIN OF CRETIN - 1770–80; < French; Franco-Provençal creitin, crestin human being, literally, Christian, hence one who is human despite deformities)

Lord, save us from your followers!

Here is a riff I posted earlier today.

My advice to anyone who holds the so-called "intellectual elites" in contempt:
1.) Learn something.
2.) Learn how to learn.

3.) Don’t be proud of your ignorance.
4.) If you’re a "Christian" "conservative," don’t think Jesus wants you to be stupid.
5.) And don’t be cruel. If you love people without first asking if they’re “deserving” will get you through the Pearly Gates much more surely than licking Malignant Messiah’s boots.

"Why Americans Are Dying from Despair"
The unfairness of our economy, two economists argue, can be measured not only in dollars but in deaths.
By Atul Gawande, The New Yorker, March 16, 2020
Alan: For several years I have thought of Republicans as being neo-necrophiliacs.
They are not necrophiliac in the "common" sense of having intercourse with corpses, but rather by way of being oddly enamoured of visiting death upon people.
Republicans’ ferocious determination to deprive people of healthcare is a textbook illustration of this neo-necrophilia.

The Hard, Central Truth Of Contemporary Conservatism

The hard, central "fact" of contemporary "conservatism" is its insistence on a socio-economic threshold above which people deserve government assistance, and below which people deserve to die.

The sooner the better.

Unless conservatives are showing n'er-do-wells The Door of Doom, they just don't "feel right."

To allay this chthonic anxiety, they resort to Human Sacrifice,  hoping that spilled blood will placate "the angry gods," including the one they've made of themselves. http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2013/09/harvard-study-45000-americans-die.html

Having poked their own eyes out, they fail to see that self-generated wrath creates "the gods" who hold them thrall.
Almost "to a man," contemporary "conservatives" have apotheosized themselves and now -- sitting on God's usurped throne -- are rabid to pass Final Judgment

Self-proclaimed Christians, eager to thrust "the undeserving" through The Gates of Hell, are the very people most likely to cross its threshold.

Remarkably, although they are prone to believe all manner of Trumpeted nonsense, none of them are tempted to believe in their own spiritual peril.

Alan: When it comes to the bedrock fact that "thinking is a learned skill," Trump is clueless.

His Vacuity is thoughtlessly convinced that everything comes down to hunches and intuition.

... and that his hunches and intuitions are infallible.

Trump's determination to fly by the seat of his pants is an all-encompassing excuse for never having learned how to gather information, hypothesize courses of action, test hypotheses, and after consultation with others, reaching thoughtful, well-informed conclusions.

It's as if Malignant Messiah's mind is as hormonally reactive as his dick.
