Alan: If it is not clear already, I want to state, explicitly, two inter-related traits that cripple "Christian" "conservatives," often corroding their souls. 

Terrified of eternal perdition, these putative "conservatives" seek every possible assurance that they themselves are certainly "saved" and their mechanism of choice to accomplish this end is to contemplate how much better they are than "the baby killers." 

Lord Jesus! What could be worse than a "baby killer?!?"

And so, by pointing their finger (often their middle finger) at the "inconceivably vile" people who "kill babies," they feel that the eternal status of their soul soars in God's ledger -- all the way to "The Green Zone"... if only by comparison with the "indisputably damned" baby killers who occupy a qualitatively different category of blackguardly evil.

However...

What "Christian" "conservatives" cannot even entertain, much less approve, is the powerful argument that abortion is 1.) inevitable regardless The Law, and 2.) societies which offer legal abortion frequently have abortion rates LOWER than societies where abortion is against The Law.

I go so far as to venture that much of the motivation behind making abortion illegal is that women will be forced to seek abortions under unsanitary conditions and, so, many of them will suffer the punishment of illness, disability or death which their "loving" God would surely call down upon them.
