Alan: The simplistic thinkers on "the pro-life side" pre-empt discussion and debate by a priori presumption that pro-choice (or, if you prefer, pro-abortion) advocates are baby killers and - as the meme below puts it: "perpetrators of genocidal infanticide.

Abortion is a persistent reality which has been discussed throughout human history, mostly with a "background" assumption that women would commit abortion when they saw fit and there would be no civil penalty. Furthermore, mainstream Jewish moral theology holds that abortion is not only valid in cases where the mother's life is at risk, but that it is urgent that the fetus be ripped from the woman in order to protect Mom.

Abortion's bottom line is that people of conscience "draw the line somewhere" which - if nothing else - establishes the principle that once a society has drawn the line somewhere - e.g., in cases of "rape" or "incest" - then all conscionable people have the right to draw their "line" where their conscience informs them. An Aside: Revealingly the same "bottom line" pertains to Second Amendment limitation. There are no 2nd Amendment firebrands who argue that citizens have the right to bear nuclear weapons.

And so, even the most wild-eyed, conspiratorial militiamen (and militiawomen) admit that it is appropriate to "draw a line somewhere." And once a line is drawn, it establishes the principle that all American citizens have the right to draw their own line where they wish.

Yet again, the simple minds on the right always presume that their personal moral principles are, in effect, the principles dictated by God, and therefore they not only "can" but "must" impose their will on others.

The trustworthiness of "conservative" pro-lifers is further compromised by how egregiously loose they play with Truth in Donald Trump's regime.

In a personal communication, The Thinking Housewife told me point blank that she did not believe the well-documented fact that America's abortion rate is falling precipitously and that -- with safe, legal abortion in place (along with widespread scientific sex education and readily available contraception) the abortion rate is now lower than it was on the eve of Rowe v. Wade. And furthermore the trend line of declining abortion is clearly "heading south."

It is an inconvenient truth that there are routinely 2-3 times higher abortion rates in countries where abortion is illegal than in an overwhelming number of countries where abortion is safe and legal.

Where abortion has been outlawed by pro-Life supporters, there are significantly higher abortion rates, and sometimes hugely higher abortion rates.

If the pro-Life goal is to diminish the number of abortions (a practice that CANNOT be eliminated by law), then pro-Life advocates are morally obliged to support abortion, readily available contraception, and high-quality, scientific-predicated birth control.
