"Turkey Moves Into Northern Syria"

PRI's "The World"

Turkey has moved into northern Syria, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on Twitter just after 9 a.m. ET. The Kurdish forces guarding camps of ISIS fighters warned of a “humanitarian catastrophe” and the operation could deepen turmoil in the region.

Turkey launches Syria operation

Erdoğan wrote on Twitter that the “Operation Peace Spring” had launched and he promised to “preserve Syria’s territorial integrity and liberate local communities from terrorists.” The controversial operation, which world powers fear could open a new phase in Syria's war and deepen regional turmoil, is an effort to create a "safe zone" to eventually house some of Turkey's 3.6 million Syrian refugees. Turkey had been poised to advance into northeast Syria since US troops began vacating the area after an abrupt policy shift by US President Donald Trump, widely criticized in Washington as a betrayal of America's Kurdish militia allies.
