Dear Friends,
I hope this email finds you all well!
I just read the partially redacted whistle-blower complaint released yesterday and available here:
It is utterly damning.
Combined with the transcript of the Ukraine call, the president's and Giuliani's public statements, and the larger pattern of conduct we have seen, it is also absolutely credible.
The president is conducting foreign policy on behalf of his personal political fortunes, putting the screws to another country to either do his hatchet work or lose American aid--aid that is a bulwark for a country whose territory was seized in violation of international law by...Russia. There is no distinction between the Oval Office and Trump Campaign HQ, except that we are paying the bills for the former while it acts as the latter.
I believe this is the critical moment for action--both because this is the clearest "smoking gun" evidence we have seen and also because the peril of the president escaping accountability now is extreme. Should he pass through unscathed, the culture of corruption will have breached the last line of defense within our institutions. I fear that the American people, by failing to support accountability now, will be complicit in that breach.
So, I think it's urgent that we all call Republican members of Congress. I called Graham, Collins, Thune, Rubio, Sasse, Murkowski, Toomey, and Romney this morning.
I don't know how to broadcast this sense of urgency to others who might take action, but I feel that we should do so somehow.
I've been waiting for a "this is it" occasion to do more than spectate and grouse; this is it.
Best,
FXA
