How Do Trump And Obama Stack Up As Liars: Democracy Dies When Falsehood Is Normalized

"The picture he keeps in the attic."
For Republicans, it is "all about winning."

It's not about Truth except in those instances when Truth coincides with partisan or personal self-interest.

For example, I have always been eager to point out that Obama lied when he said of Obamacare: "And you can keep your own doctor!"

Although there is a chance his advisors misled him (and he actually thought he was telling the truth) it has always been my working hypothesis that Obama LIED when he made this bogus claim.

Clarification of this point is the issue is the issue -- and the LIE -- I would most like Obama to explain.

I also admit that Obama concealed truths hundreds (if not thousands) of times, but this question of "keeping one's own doctor" is the only instance in which I know "I caught President Obama in a lie."

Obama also "drew a red line in the Syrian sand," but even in that instance my hunch is that Obama disobeyed his own directive.

However, I don't want to split hairs and so I feel a obligation to acknowledge that Obama LIED to the American people twice during his 8 years in office.

On the other hand, the day that Trump completed his third year in office, he told his 16,241st lie/deception.

If there are other instances of Obama lying -- and you can document them -- please let me know.

I will be forthright admitting to -- and writing about -- every documented lie you bring to light.

The New York Times says Obama told 18 lies during his two terms:
Opinion | Trump's Lies vs. Obama's - The New York Times
Dec 14, 2017 - In his first 10 months in office, he has told 103 separate untruths, many of them repeatedly. Obama told 18 over his entire eight-year tenure.

And here is what Snopes has to say about "Obama's 50 Lies":
Obama's 50 Lies / Obama Not Exactly - Snopes.com
List documents fifty lies told by Barack Obama. ... A list circulating online contains 50 false statements by President Barack Obama. See Example(s) ... As far as we know, no one has yet found any matching article in the pages of LIFE magazine.

Although Obama occupied The Oval Office nearly 3 times longer than Trump has, Obama only told 0.31% as many lies, even if we assume every alleged lie was actually qualified.

In other words, Trump has told more than 300 times as many lies as Obama even without correcting for "time in office."

If we do correct for time in office, Trump has told nearly 900 times as many lies as Obama did during his entire tenure.

Any Open Society's "democratic process" requires that Truth-telling be The Foundational Norm. In the absence of this foundational norm, societies transform immediately and precipitously in the direction of social and political rot.

Nor will individual Americans be immune from this rot.

The zeitgeist is the zeitgeist, and it takes its toll.

Trump has all the characteristics of a pathological liar. And that pathology corrodes Democracy as a lethal disease would undermine the health of an afflicted individual.

Are we to wait for the death of Democracy to say: "Oh, so that's how it works: the normalization of compulsive lying is lethal to The Body Politic."

Or, do we point out what's true?

Trump is a traitor to Democracy.

And democratic governance -- as we've known it in these United States -- will not survive another 4 years.
