Zach: What Do I Think About People Who Voted For Obama In 2008 And For Trump In 2016?

I just concluded a brief review of logical fallacy and I've come away with a disheartening sense that Trump's
beloved "uneducated people" -- in addition to being unwilling - are probably incapable of clear thought.

  • Zach Zimet What do you think about people who voted for Obama in '08 and Trump in '16?

I would have to study these folks case-by-case, or at least bring statistical analysis to bear.

      As one hypothesis however...

I believe the United States is still passing through The National Lunacy which began on 9/11.

Consequently, many Americans are highly volatile, if not unhinged.

We are also a fickle, fashion-oriented people who are comfortable with the view that it is good to “just shake things up.”

Recalling the saying that “Growth is the ideology of a cancer cell” I would suggest that “Shaking things up is the ideology of nuclear detonation.”

      Consider.

Before North Korea became Donald Trump‘s “friend and dis armament partner,” more than half of Americans expressed the view that they would not care if Trump dropped the big one on Pyongyang.

Not only that but in June, 2019, Mother Jones reported that 1/3 of Americans WANT to nuke North Korea.

What do you think about that?

Euripides commented: “Those whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.”

      Hmm...

BTW: Wikipedia says that 13% of Obama voters voted for Trump in 2016.

I find that number astonishing - but completely consistent with a nation that still thinks it’s #1 and that Donald Trump has made it great again.

    • Zach Zimet My opinion is that there are a lot of people in this country who aren't that expert on the nuances of public policy and don't delve deeply into candidates, but who believe they have a bum deal. They vote for the "change" candidate, which in 2008 was clearly Obama and in 2016 was clearly Trump.

I don't think these folks are stupid or even ignorant, just that this stuff isn't a high priority for them. Maybe they are busy working 2 jobs to be poor, or caring for elderly parents, or raising kids. I dunno.

    • Zach Zimet I don't think most Americans are unhinged. I think we are all humans, and we will make weird and scary decisions based on our limited ability to perceive consequences.

Also, I think nuking NK could have been vaguely rational. I think some kind of invasion or forcible removal of their nuclear program could have made sense--the idea of NK selling nukes for cash is scary and realistic.

I agree with much of what you say.

I disagree with you on the “vague rationality” of nuking North Korea.

I think a third of Americans are essentially unhinged — as wacky cultish as Jim Jones followers — and that enough other Americans are “vaguely unhinged” to make our National Lunacy majoritarian.

I’m not in a position to send you the link to my Cruelty Party compendium, but I will get it to you soon.

I also think Pope Francis is right when he says Trump’s speeches are reminiscent of Hitler‘s in 1934.

I do not doubt that tens of millions of American "patriots," giddy over Trump's calculated cruelty, would be as "likable" "in person" as "the good Germans" who went along with the Holocaust.

      Yes, I know... Godwin's Law...

I also know Trump is reenacting the inflammatory, race-based rhetoric and fascist political posturing that characterized Germany in the 1930s.

But I am also convinced these "good Germans" are essentially unhinged people.

As is true with many sociopaths and psychopaths --- Ted Bundy being a salient example of "the type" -- these loons are often charming, high-functioning individuals in their personal lives. Doctors. Lawyers. Scientists. Teachers. Bankers.

Today, these same people -- including retiring Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee who has NOTHING TO LOSE by voting to hear eyewitness testimony -- will vote to enable liar-cheat-felon-mobster-racist-traitor's continued march to "Lemming Cliff."

Can you provide -- even theoretically -- one remotely plausible reason (that is in the best interest of the country) why Trump's senate enablers refuse to hear Bolton's testimony?
