I read the C.S. Lewis passage you posted, and throughout I could only see an apt description of The Thinking Housewife and other totalitarian conspiracists ricocheting in their confirmation bias bubbles.
"Confirmation Bias And The Power Of Disconfirming Evidence"
FROM C.S. Lewis, in God in the Dock: Essays on Theology Making of Modern Theology:
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be “cured” against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

Alan: Here is another apropos Lewis quotation in which he addresses, even more specifically, "religious busybodies," whom -- in the entire domain of busybodies -- are The Most Oppressive.
"She's the sort of woman who lives for others - you can tell the others by their hunted expressions." C.S. Lewis, "The Screwtape Letters"
In large part, the oppression of busybodies is attributable to their Absolute Certainty that THEY know best and that God is not only completely on their side, but authorizes them -- even obliges them -- to be oppressive.
Otherwise they will roast - for eternity - in The Lake Of Unquenchable Fire.
Ouch!
"The terrible thing about our time is precisely the ease with which theories can be put into practice. The more perfect, the more idealistic the theories, the more dreadful is their realization. We are at last beginning to rediscover what perhaps men knew better in very ancient times, in primitive times before utopias were thought of: that liberty is bound up with imperfection, and that limitations, imperfections, errors are not only unavoidable but also salutary. The best is not the ideal. Where what is theoretically best is imposed on everyone as the norm, then there is no longer any room even to be good. The best, imposed as a norm, becomes evil.”
"Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander,” by Trappist monk, Father Thomas Merton
And so, unable to live up to humankind's "job description"...
