In addition to beans, other ingredients include:

Onion (sliced or chopped)

Garlic (optional)

Jalapeño (optional) 

Oil (optional)

Salt

If you like your beans spicy -- and jalapeño is not available -- add "red pepper chile flakes."

 Every kitchen should have a large bottle of Red Chile Flakes on hand. These flakes are a simple, dependable way to impart spiciness to food; everything from tuna-or-salmon salad through stir fry and pan-fried seafood.

Red chile flakes go a long way toward eliminating/masking that "fishy taste."
