"Conservative" Efforts To Diminish Health Coverage For Americans Are Vile And Represhensible

A Scandal Deserving More Outrage

Here’s a story that hasn’t received nearly enough attention: 400,000 American children lost health insurance between 2016 and 2018. That is a reversal of a long period of gains in insurance coverage, and it should be a scandal. In some cases, kids with orthopedic injuries won’t get complicated surgical repairs they need and will be disabled for life. And there’s strong evidence that those without insurance have higher mortality rates.

The reason for the decline in insurance coverage seems to be restrictions and requirements that supposedly are about eliminating fraud but have an impact that is simply gratuitously cruel. One problem is that low-income or homeless people often live unstable lives, bouncing from apartment to apartment, with mail rarely forwarded — so they don’t respond to letters and then get dropped from benefit programs.
