The Key Question

If ever more guns make America safer,
why are we not already the safest country in the the world?
Instead, we are the most dangerous "developed" nation on earth.

Greetings,

Friend Frances has come up with a winning idea for a referendum on next year's November ballot: Mandatory background checks for firearm purchase.

Americans are very much in favor of background checks and in recent time NRA membership-and-influence have been dwindling.

Look at these striking numbers from Politifact.

Between 85% and 94% of Americans want mandatory background checks!

"Three More NRA Board Members Resign"

Although it's a little known fact, only 32% of American households now possess a firearm, a number that is down nearly 40% since 1973.

A 2007 survey by the U.N's Office on Drugs and Crime found that the United States, which has 5% of the world's population, owns 50% of the world's guns.
The number of households owning guns has declined from almost 50% in 1973 to just over 32% in 2010, according to a 2011 study produced by The University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center. The number of gun owners has gone down almost 10% over the same period, the report found
The concentration comes, in part, because guns are "marketed by and large to people who already own guns," Lizotte said.

So, if you live in a state where citizen initiative can put a referendum item on the ballot, get cracking.

And if you live in a state like North Carolina where the oligarchs put all referendum proposals through the bottleneck of our antediluvian State Assembly, tell friends in other states.

And although it could be just anothen attack of farfallonas of the blowhole, I wonder if obligatory background checks might get traction even in JesseHelmslandia.

Dear F,

You may recall that Michael Moore predicted Trump's victory.

Here's what he recommends now as a winning strategy for Democrats.

You have the kind of insight F that can come up with good referendum issues.

Name a few.

The problem is that many referendum issues which will bring out left-leaning voters will also bring out right-wing voters.

That said, there are more left-wing than right-wing voters in America.

As you probably recall, Hillary got 4.56% more popular votes than liar-cheat-felon-cultural-terrorist-child-abuser-racist-misogynist-pussy-grabber.
