There is mounting evidence that psychopaths turn "to the dark side" due of deficiencies in early childhood conditioning.

There is also an accumulation of evidence that specific parts of the brain -- sometimes stunted during the first 3-4 years of life -- can be restored and enlarged by enriched environments whose "conditions" are the exact opposite of punitive incarceration.

In effect, "good people" have been unusually prone to blame "bad people" for not "turning" their will "to the light."

Since the first sacred scriptures were written, we humans -- reflexively handing down Bronze Age misunderstandings -- have over-valued will-power.

At the other end of the spectrum, it is becoming clear that support for consistently-punitive people like Trump will result in "invalidation" of religious systems such punitive people espouse.
