"Is The United States Still A Nation Of Law? Bad Cops And Bad Politicians Walk"

OK, I am a former police officer. I have taught police officers in their academies, and I have been a consultant to several police departments across country. What these folks are telling you is true. If there are not exigent circumstances, meaning that there is not a clear emergency in your house the police can only legally enter you home two ways. You invite them in or they have a warrant.
Now, as one person pointed out, how do you know for sure that the person banging on your door is a police officer. In the Hillside Strangler cases in LA, one of the Stranglers had a police uniform that he had stolen. The recently caught Golden State Killer was actually a former police officer who may have committed some of his crimes while still a police officer. At a minimum, he could have old uniforms left from when he was a police officer. You really do not know if he is a police officer and if he is, is he there on police business.
Next, assuming he is there on police business, why would he not simply be following the law and the Constitution? It is not that he has not been trained otherwise.
It is also possible he is at the wrong address. It has happened that DEA agents broke into a house in the middle of the night, dragged a man and his wife out of their bed and handcuffed them. They then proceeded to rip their house apart looking for drugs which they never found because … they were at the right house number on the wrong street. The people had to sue to get their house repaired.
It is not whether you believe you have anything to hide. More importantly, it is what the police officer believes that counts. If you open your door and the police officer sees something that he can say “appeared to be contraband” He can initiate a full scale search of the premises.
You must understand the mind of some officers and how they become so focused on catching bad guys that anyone and everyone fits the criteria. I cringe some times when actual police say something like, “well, he didn't seem to be grieving the right way for a man that just lost his wife, girlfriend, child or whatever”. That should never be allowed because everyone is different.
So, pay heed to what these folks are telling you. A police officer is not going to bang on your door without a warrant or a very good reason.
