Correspondence With A Member Of My "Meme Community" Re: Conservatism, Change And Fear

Which, of course, is complete nonsense. First, EVERYONE reacts with some trepidation to change. Anyone who claims they don't is lying. That said, however, it is conservatives who welcome GOOD change.

Change for the sake of change isn't good.

Obama was fond of saying he wanted to "fundamentally transform the US." That means he hated and despised what it was. After all....you don't want to "fundamentally transform" that which you like.

Alan: Although I agree with your view that "change for its own sake is an unworthy goal," "fundamental transformation" is often a great good, a fact proven by The American Revolution and The French Revolution, arguably the most fundamental political changes the world has seen.

The "fundamental transformation" that Obama wanted to see in America was a revolution from "cruelty to kindness" spearheaded by his quest for universal healthcare coverage, a long-established political reality in every other developed nation.
The United States Of America: "We're #1"

You may prefer (or at least tell yourself you prefer) incomplete healthcare and "denial of coverage due to pre-existing conditions", but I - along with a decisive number of Americans - prefer universal coverage.

And in light of this preference I support fundamental transformation from cruelty to kindness.

"The Hard, Central Truth Of Contemporary Conservatism"

Admittedly, "taking Americans guns away" would have been a "fundamental transformation."

But Obama clearly stated -- on numerous occasions -- that he had no interest in First Amendment aboltion.

Indeed, during his 8 years in office, unimpeded gun sales SOARED.

On the other hand, under Trump gun sales experiencing a mini-depression.

Please document one instance in which President Obama advocated "taking away Americans' guns."

Just one.

What other "fundamental transformations" did Obama promote?

It is conservatism's "reflexive fear of change" that transforms right-wingers into "scaredy cats" who are so self-terrorized that they represent a "Republican" as a fundamental threat.

If you "stick to the facts" and provide factual references (neither of which is conservatism's "strong suit") what, exactly, is "the fundamental transformation" that Obama threatened?

You seize upon this innocuous phrase, "fundamental transformation," and then -- proving my fundamental premise -- you frighten yourself with it.

"Conservatives Scare More Easily Than Liberals"

Then there is this oddity...

Trump himself called for revolution -- a revolution that, ironically, would have prevented "His Deplorability" from becoming president:

Donald Trump Weighs In On The Electoral College:
"A Disaster For Democracy"

Here is article by George McGovern in which he details conservatism's instinctual fear of change, providing examples of conservatism's subsequent approval of the self-same changes they initially resisted - Social Security and Medicare chief among them. (If you're against Social Security and Medicare, please say so. Readers will be interested to know your core values.)
