Alan: In the NPR report above, the official in charge of Guayaquil, Ecuador's COVID-19 response, says morgues in the Guayaquil area processed 6703 cadavers in the first two weeks of April when the usual tally for those same morgues is around 1000 in a given fortnight.
Currently, there is hot debate in the United States and Europe concerning how many lives "would have been lost" in the pandemic if social distancing and other public health measures had not been in place.
It has aldo been said that we will never know the true extent of coronavirus' ravages in poor countries because lack of testing prevents authorities from listing coronavirus as a cause of death.

If epidemiologists were to interview officials in charge of coronavirus containment in Mexico City, Lima, Bogota, Istanbul, Kinshasa, Nairobi, Delhi, Kolkata, Ho Chi Minh City, Rio de Janeiro, Khartoum and Baghdad in order to compare morgue records during "peak pandemic" and "normal times" we would get a very good "fix" on both imponderables.
