A Plea For Financial Assistance For A Very Cool "Meals On Wheels" Program In My County

Fundraiser by Grace Camblos : Help OCRA feed Orange County seniors ...

Dear Norma,

Thanks for your email.

Yet again, I am reminded of the GREAT work you and your volunteers do at OCRA's Meals on Wheels.

Not only is it hard, time-consuming, essential work, but you are all very courageous putting yourselves "out there" day after day.

Your brand-new 6 minute video is brilliant - not only informative but soulful! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYy027tLI3I

I was riveted as if watching a high quality mini-documentary.

It was so engaging I watched it twice in a row!

I am happy to "spread the word" of your fundraiser.

Hopefully, lots of folks will give to this wonderful, "get down," Go-Fund-Me cause. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-ocra

Thanks also for inquiring after Danny and Maria who are both well.

Since quarantine began, Maria has accepted an all expenses paid offer to attend a master's program at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She examined every program that would best help her develop the impassioned work she has been doing at Grand Canyon Trust -- masters programs that focus the interaction of societies, economics, politics and culture as they relate to environmental degradation, ecological harm that is largely attributable to power disparity between native American communities and oppressive structures put in place by European conquistadores --- all this with an eye to honing techniques for effective education and political action that builds sovereign communities comprised of people who realize their personal and collective power. In this pursuit, the development of educational technique is of great importance, particularly to Maria who is already a gifted educator.

Maria whittled prospective programs down to two; the other being at the University of Hawaii whose doctoral program she thinks might be her best choice "down the line."

Speaking of conquistadores, did you know that Hillsborough was part of the Spanish Empire until several years after Hillsborough was founded? http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2019/08/my-nc-hometown-was-part-of-spanish.html

As you probably know, Danny and I have been making lots of music together.

In the last year -- and most especially in recent months -- Danny has made great progress as a musician.

Caribou spent much of today collaborating on the composition of a song in concert with a small group of computer-linked friends from Colorado College, folks currently spread out over the country. As I understand it, a singer named Blaise is the "voice" they all have in mind.

I hope you - and all your loved ones - are well and thriving.

Please give my best warm wishes to Richard.

I look forward to re-convening our Spanish gathering.

Con afecto

Alan

Good evening Alan!

I would try this in Spanish but now is not the time!! I hope that you are well and that Maria and Danny are ok too. I look forward to getting back to normal.

OCRA is putting out a call to the community to raise funds.  We wanted you to know that we are sending out this note, so that if you would put it on your social media, and tell your family, neighbors and friends, we would much appreciate it!

As you know, Orange County Rural Alliance (OCRA), is a Meals on Wheels program that delivers meals to 80-85 seniors in rural Orange County, NC, Since the Corona virus, OCRA has had to change the way it operates.  No longer can we visit with the seniors, all we can do is leave meals on their porch.   Because of COVID-19 and the required social distancing, families can’t visit their aging relatives as often to bring them additional food.   In addition seniors have difficulty getting to far-away grocery stores.  As a result the seniors are in greater need now.

OCRA has stepped up to deliver five meals a week instead of just two. But our funds are stretched to the limit.  The restaurants that used to donate some meals are closed and we are scrambling to find additional replacement meals.

We have made a video to tell more of the OCRA story and started a GoFundMe campaign to raise enough money to cover one month’s worth of food and operating expenses. We are asking our friends to do two things to help OCRA at this time.

1. Make a donation of ANY amount
2. Spread the word on your social networks. The more exposure we get, the more likely we'll reach our goal.

To donate, simply click the link to the fundraiser below:

OCRA appreciates anything you can do to help us help the elderly in Orange County during these difficult times. Thank you.

Looking forward to seeing you when the virus goes away!

Sincerely,
Norma White
