Dear Fred,
Sometimes Elaine drives me round the twist... most recently her "Gun Control" comment: "Making good people helpless will not make bad people harmless."
It is clinically delusional (and verging paranoia) to allege that "gun control" advocacy contrives to make "good people" "helpless."
There is NO significant political movement that seeks to stifle gun evangelists' psycho-socially destructive urge to arm themselves, Rambo-like, as prelude to "packing" in church.
To "Open Carry" In Church Now Has Its Own Name: To "Church Carry"
Aquinas was right. "Sin" (from the Greek words for "missing the mark,") is always accompanied by loss of perspective/proportion.
In light of this rubric, contemporary conservatives -- particularly Christian conservatives -- devote themselves, round the clock, to the continual commission of sin.

PS Ironically, "helping" people arm themselves without rigorous regulation in place harms otherwise good people by polluting their psyches, simultaneously contributing to the culture's generalized normalization of Violence-as-Solution.

Notably, O'Rourke's analysis of his own party is spot-on
although his analysis of The Democratic Party is a reductio ad absurdum missing the mark by a country mile.
