'Voyage of Mercy' tells resonant story of Americans aiding starving Ireland

by Tom Deignan
Book review: Stephen Puleo's detailed history explores the charitable efforts Americans — rural and urban, immigrant and native-born, Christian, Quaker and Jewish — made to alleviate Irish suffering in the 1840s.

The American Party: Know-Nothing Nativism And Opposition To Catholic Immigration

Alan: I assume Trumpist nativism contains a significant element of anti-Catholicism.

Similarly, I assume Canada is more civilized than the United States because 43.2% of the Canadian population is Catholic (and therefore disproportionately communitarian) whereas Gringolandia is only 22% Catholic and therefore "bought off" by the blandishments of "rugged individualism." (Illinois senator Dick Durbin holds that the motto of The Republican Party is: "We are all in this... alone.")

I believe that the upshot is this demographic difference is that Canada crosses a critical communitarian threshold and the United States doesn't.

Don't get me started on Cromwell and The British Boot stomping Ireland's jugular.

Decades ago, Janet informed me that plenty of food was being produced in Ireland throughout the potato famine but the British landlords were exporting all the abundant crops of grain, leaving "the Irish" with only potatoes.

Of course, there is always plenty of guilt to go 'round.

Of course, there is plenty of guilt to go round.

Even so, there is a revealing British joke (which still has some currency in England):

Question: "Why did the English invent the wheel barrow?"

Answer: "To teach the Irish to walk on two legs."

Chesterton held that "all wars are religious wars" which, by my lights, is to say that all conflict is over core values.
