Like the Pharisees, the Know Nothings are always with us.

Alan: What would be revealed by careful investigation of the reading habits of American liberals and conservatives.

George Lakoff argues that the underlying bifurcation in American "value systems" distills to whether people were acculturated to "a strict father" with consequent need for a strong patriarch/alpha-dog, authoritarian absolutism, obedience to hierarchy, devolution of responsibility to atomized individuals and the administration of swift, harsh punishment, or, whether people were raised in the light of a "nurturing parent" with consequent tolerance, propegation of diversity, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, inclusiveness and a "certain" indulgence.

Were such study undertaken, I suspect we would discover a disproportionate number of conservatives who focus their reading on the bible and derivative commentaries.
