What Second Amendment Evangelists Fail To Understand About Their Opposition

Alan: No one is even talking about "taking away the right to arm ourselves."
For a man who "comes across" as prudent, judicious and soft-spoken, Carson says things that are not only untrue but quasi-hysterical and deliberately inflammatory.

"Dr. Ben Carson And The Seventh Day Adventists: Remarkably Adept At Holding Illogical Beliefs"

Dear John,

I think Ben Carson is a fine person, a likable guy and an admirable surgeon.

I would like to "have a beer with him."

However, he is completely unprepared for national and global politics.

Christian conservatives continually "poke their own eyes out" with the mistaken belief that God will reward personal virtue with political success.

In the muck of politics -- particularly in democratic process where compromising one's moral principles is absolutely essential for civility and any semblance of progress -- the belief that conservative virtues create an "invisible protective shield" around "Good Christians" is just another way to pave the road to hell with good intentions.

"Holier-than-thou" moral posturing has contributed disproportionately to the obstructionist dysfunction which  is the greatest menace to the survival of American democracy.

"The terrible thing about our time is precisely the ease with which theories can be put into practice.  The more perfect, the more idealistic the theories, the more dreadful is their realization.  We are at last beginning to rediscover what perhaps men knew better in very ancient times, in primitive times before utopias were thought of: that liberty is bound up with imperfection, and that limitations, imperfections, errors are not only unavoidable but also salutary. The best is not the ideal.  Where what is theoretically best is imposed on everyone as the norm, then there is no longer any room even to be good.  The best, imposed as a norm, becomes evil.”
"Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander,” by Trappist monk, Father Thomas Merton

Make no mistake: we must "give the devil his due " --- also known as "rendering unto Caesar that which is Caesar's" -- or, ironically, the devil (despite the best of intentions) gets the upper hand.

"The best is not the ideal.  Where what is theoretically best is imposed on everyone as the norm, then there is no longer any room even to be good.  The best, imposed as a norm, becomes evil.”

The profoundest truths are paradoxical.

To quote the master:

"Love your enemies.
Do good to those who hate you. Pray for those who persecute you."

As always I am  eager for biblical literalists -- as "cafeteria-style" as anyone else -- to explain away these crystal clear moral enjoinders."

The Last Time Christians Had Balls They Believed In Martyrdom

It is not "in the nature of things" to end evil by "killing it off."

Rather, as Lincoln observed:

I realize the following post is long.

But it is essential reading if we hope to understand Ben Carson's threat to "the last, best hope of earth."
