Kurt Vonnegut On "The Most Vocal Christians"

Memes, Christianity, and Kurt Vonnegut: "For some reason, the most vocal
 Christians among us never mention
the Beatitudes (Matthew 5). But, often
with tears in their eyes, the demand
 that the Ten Commandments be
posted in public buildings. And of
course, that's Moses, not Jesus. I
haven't heard one of them demand
that the Sermon on the Mount, the
 Beatitudes, be posted anywhere.
"Blessed are the merciful" in a
 courtroom? "Blessed are the
 peacemakers'' in the Pentagon? Give
 me a break!"

Dear Tig.

I’ve long held that conservative Christians are more at home in the Old Testament then the New.

If Jesus came back - and used a pseudonym - they would crucify him all over again.

Some say it happens every day.

Love,

PS The Old Testament is an extraordinary compendium of sacred scripture. Enriched by Rabbinic commentary, it is even better. One can make a sound case that Rabbi Yeshua/Jesus dedicated himself to the elaboration of Old Testament commentary. But it seems odd to profess Christianity while focusing with such disproportionality on narrow, “literal” readings of the Old Testament. “A text without a context is a pretext.”

PPS The Vonnegut quotation was “sent” to me by Mary Rider who, with her husband Patrick O’Neill (and the help of many others, including their 8 children,) operate the Father Mulholland Catholic Worker House in Garner North Carolina.
