Dear Ed,

Thanks for sending Donald Trump's "101 Ways To Forget The Forgotten."

In the view of Tomas D'Aquino -- widely agreed to be the greatest Doctor of the Church

'Arguing against those who said that natural philosophy was contrary to the Christian faith, (Aquinas) writes in his treatise Faith, Reason and Theology that "even though the natural light of the human mind is inadequate to make known what is revealed by faith, nevertheless what is divinely taught to us by faith cannot be contrary to what we are endowed with by nature. One or the other would have to be false, and since we have both of them from God, he would be the cause of our error, which is impossible."'

Thomas Aquinas On The Relationship Between Faith And "Secular" Knowledge

If "conservative" "Christians" (who are neither) could see themselves for what they are --- purveyors of "alternative facts," deniers of demonstrably provable facts and believers in forms-of-faith that hold Truth in contempt -- they would be ashamed of themselves.

On the other hand, "Christian" "conservatives" (remember: they are neither) have preempted any consideration of truth espoused by liberal-leftists because "we" are "baby killers" even though it is clear that the incidence of abortion in the United States has fallen to pre-Roe v.Wade levels and continues to plummet.

Why? Because unashamed access to birth control and sex education is linked with falling abortion rates whereas those nations that ban birth control and sex education have abortion rates that are two to three times higher than those in knowledge-driven nations. https://www.huffingtonpost.com.mx/entry/reducing-abortion-rates-policy_us_589b8ea5e4b09bd304bfd920

Even if we look at the most conservatively-biased data, the illegalization of birth control and sex education does not lower abortion rates below the rate of polities which provide safe, legal abortion, coupled with unashamed birth control and universal sex education. (The assumption that the enactment of conservative legislation makes virtue prosper is as preposterous as the neo-Confederate urge to emblazon The Ten Commandments in every public place. The infantility of such wishful thinking is as naive as the stated belief that whoremonger has "changed his evil ways" and therefore deserves a brand new mulligan every hour, on the hour.)

If one believes in facts, the strongest argument in the overarching abortion debate is that those who seek to ban abortion are responsible for a cultural matrix that increases abortion rates well above those in liberal democracies where abortion is legal, birth control accessible and shameless, and where informative sex education is the norm.

Here is Pulitizer-Prize-winning Politifact's analysis of the claim that 98% of Catholic women in their reproductive years have used birth control: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/feb/06/cecilia-munoz/white-house-official-says-98-catholic-women-have-u/

My ultra-conservative friend, The Thinking Housewife, realizes the overwhelming likelihood that most of her readers use artificial contraception now - or used it during their child-bearing years.

But she will not poll them for fear that her readers' actual behavior will puncture the "holier-than-thou" theories that "conservatives" are wont to espouse.

At minimum, the data reveal that we liberals do not kill babies any more often than inhabitants of conservative societies, and, at minumum, anyone not driven by an ideological/credal agenda would see the issue as "a wash" - not a "walk-off" victory for self-righteous conservatives.

To summarize: "conservative" "Christians" are characterized 1.) by rigidity and brittleness, 2.) by doctrinaire "damnation of the other," and 3.) by need to coddle a precarious belief in "salvation assurance" by seeing themselves as absolutely right and "anyone else" as absolutely wrong.

By my lights, this judgmentalism -- and the predictable regularity with which "true believers" kill (or arrange for the killing) of "infidels" -- is more likely to jeopardize "salvation" than to insure it.

Plank In Eye Disease: Humankind's Most Frequent Affliction

Any psyche that is prey to the core belief that God is punitive and will therefore damn "lost souls" to "The Unquenchable Lake of Fire" is obliged -- as Christian orthodoxy teaches -- to remake itself in God's image.

"You can safely assume you’ve created God in your own image
when it turns out God hates all the same people you do."
Fr. Tom Weston S. J.

The problem is that "Christian" "conservatives" are invincibly convinced that they KNOW God's will and KNOW His divine visage and are, therefore, Yaweh's "smiting right hand," divinely ordained to persecute the "already damned."

Ishi, The Last North American Indian To Leave The Wild, Died 102 Years Ago

Although not one in a thousand conservative Christian "babblers" has read the actual words ascribed to Jesus in The New Testament, they have carefully acquired all the musty documents to "prove" that their orthodox views -- and only their orthodox views -- are absolutely true to the utter exclusion of all other "comers."
