Wiggling while handcuffed; bracing one hand on the steering wheel during an arrest; yelling at an officer; getting out of a car in a high-crime neighborhood and looking “suspicious.”
In Washington, D.C., all of those actions have led to someone being charged with “assaulting a police officer.”
Here & Now contributor station WAMU, the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University and the public radio show “Reveal” teamed up to look into this charge during a five-month-long investigation. Patrick Madden of WAMU reports.
