My Band Leader, JN, Wrote This Memoir About An Encounter With A Disabled Vet

Today while in downtown Durham I took time to talk to a wounded war veteran who served in Viet Nam.

I asked him about the debates on Facebook and in the news and although it is just one man's opinion I found his views on the subject quite moving and a little different from the normal social media debates.

He started by saying that "many Americans and many of our veterans can't stand, can't kneel, can't hear or see, can't cross their hearts." Just because you don't stand doesn't have (explicative) to do with being patriotic. "Patriotism is about believing in, protecting and then defending the rights of all Americans."

He also added (from his wheel chair) that saying you "have to stand for the National Anthem to be patriotic is BS."
