CVS To Spend $50 Million On Antismoking Program Aimed At Youths. Lower Their Tax Rate?

Dear Denise,

I am no fan of Cowboy Capitalism.

But as an engine-of-productivity capitalism "works" incomparably well.

When properly regulated-and-taxed I think "socialized capitalism" is the way to go.

Do you know if Cuba -- or any other socialist country -- has done what CVS has done by way of removing tobacco products from its shelves?

There is much good work to be done with the carrot-stick motivators of "heavier taxes for companies with benighted social policies" and "lighter taxes for companies that willingly undertake social responsibility."

In the area of tobacco-use-abatement, it seems that straightforward mathematical calculations would enable The Feds to determine how much healthcare savings derive from a big company's decision not to sell tobacco, and then -- in a cost-effective way -- rebate some portion of those savings to the do-good company in the form of lower taxes.

Do any public health researchers make these calculations?

If not, why not?

Is it too hot a political potato?

And if it's a hot potato, have any public health organizations upped the ante by publicizing the mechanism by which capitalist pigs (and their legislative lickspittles) inhibit, or even prohibit, The Good?

Shouldn't the Surgeon General be using his bully pulpit?

Shouldn't those businesses (and other organizations) which receive large sums of tax money be obliged to do the right thing as a pre-requisite for renewal of government contracts?

Or if "obligation" offends the sensibilities of peasants for plutocracy, perhaps public shaming could be put to good use.

Paz contigo,

Alan
