Frightened People Can Make Anything Seem Frightful: Xenophobia & The Management Of Fear

The Largest Mass Lynching In The United States: 11 Italians In New Orleans, 1891

Dear John,

I think the white woman who narrates the video clip you forwarded expresses views that are essentially indistinguishable from the views of other really white people who "once upon a time" believed "their" country was being over-run by dagos and wops.

Her account sounds frightful, not because it is true, but because frightened people can make any account seem frightful.

Plus, the easiest way to manage one's fear is by displacing it through xenophobic contempt.

Those who are fearful about "other races" grow convinced that "aliens" are terrorizing them and they then respond to their own fear by terrorizing "aliens."

Hating "the other" because they "hate" us is Projection Psychology 101.

As to the American white man's "religion being on the way out," I don't think Jesus ever counseled people to be fearful.

To the contrary.

"There is no fear in love.
But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.
The one who fears is not made perfect in love."

Most people in our country know nothing about this, so pass it along to everyone you know.
