500 vehicles, 1,500 people possible at Southern Heritage rally in Hillsborough, town says

HILLSBOROUGH, NC (WNCN) — Officials in a Triangle town say that a rally and ride about “Southern Heritage” this weekend is expected to draw about 1,500 people and possibly 500 vehicles.
The privately organized event, Southern Heritage Ride/Rally, will gather and drive through Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon, “and is expected to draw significant attendance,” said Catherine Wright, Hillsborough Town public information officer.

Wright said that, the Hillsborough Police Department is making preparations to accommodate the gathering, which is projected to bring about 1,500 individuals to the town.
The event — organized by Orange County Taking Back Orange County and Alamance County Taking Back Alamance County — will start with a ride in Burlington that will end in Hillsborough “with an educational rally about Confederate heritage on the lawn of the Town Hall campus,” according to Wright.
The rally is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. in Hillsborough.
“However, traffic delays should be expected for an hour before and after the event as up to 500 vehicles are expected,” Wright said in a press release. “Citizens are encouraged to use alternate routes between 1 and 2 p.m. and between 4 and 5 p.m.”
The town is partnering with other law enforcement and emergency management agencies for assistance during the event.
“To keep the gathering manageable for officers and to ensure safety for all, citizens who would like to express a counter view are encouraged to do so at another time,” Wright said.
“This is going to be a very challenging event for public safety to manage, and we are asking for and appreciate the community’s patience and help as this event happens,” Hillsborough Police Chief Duane Hampton said. “We are making every effort to minimize the impact the event will have, but if citizens can assist us by finding alternate routes and avoiding this area during the event, it will be a huge help.”
In addition to the Southern Heritage Ride/Rally, the Carolina Tarwheels’ Bikefest 2015 will take place the same day with 850 cyclists coming through Hillsborough between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. The annual fundraiser — in which proceeds are donated to bicycling-related activities in the community — offers 35-, 62- and 100-mile routes that all start and end in Hillsborough at the Historic Orange County Courthouse, 100 E. King St. A 7-mile fun ride will take riders past historic sites in and around Hillsborough.
Rally Route and Parking
Participants of the Southern Heritage Ride will enter town from U.S. 70 and take Revere Road to Corbin Street. The Hillsborough Police Department will coordinate the parking for ride participants as they arrive.
Parking at Town Hall, 101 E. Orange St., will be limited to emergency management vehicles and vehicles with an appropriate handicap parking permit.
Citizens attending only the rally are encouraged to use the town’s other public parking options in the downtown and to walk to the Town Hall campus.
At the conclusion of the event, ride participants will leave town traveling south on Churton Street through the downtown district.
Rally Location
Participants will be located on the Town Hall campus lawn, between the main building and Orange Street, as designated by the Police Department. The traffic circle in front of the main building will remain open for emergency vehicle access.
Trash/Recycling
Roll out carts will be available in several places on the Town Hall lawn. Participants are asked to pick up after themselves and to dispose of trash and recyclables in the proper receptacles.
Reminders
No weapons of any kind and no alcoholic beverages are permitted on town property or at the event.
