Abstinence education
Vitter advocated abstinence-only sex education, emphasizing abstinence over sex education that includes information about birth control, drawing criticism from Planned Parenthood.[70] He said, "Abstinence education is a public health strategy focused on risk avoidance that aims to help young people avoid exposure to harm...by teaching teenagers that saving sex until marriage and remaining faithful afterwards is the best choice for health and happiness."[71]
Abortion
Vitter has won strong praise from pro-life groups for his stance against abortion, while drawing criticism from pro-choice groups.[88] In 2001, he co-authored legislation to restrict the number of physicians allowed to prescribe RU-486, a drug used in medical abortions. The bill died in committee.[89][90]
Yeshua Excoriates Fellow Pharisees: "The Woe Passages"
— Top D.C. Republicans fear they’ll lose a safe Louisiana Senate seat if David Vitter runs for reelection: Vitter, disliked by many of his Senate Republican colleagues and badly damaged by his 2007 prostitution scandal, will be under intense pressure to not run for a third term next year if he loses the governor’s race next week. Polls show he trails by double digits.
Three shots across the bow (on background, naturally), via CNN’s Manu Raju:
- Senior Republican senator: “It would be best for the party if he didn’t run.”
- Senate Republican operative: “Let’s face the facts: He can’t win re-election to the Senate with these kind of numbers and with the difficult map that Republicans are facing, he could be a drain on the majority.”
- “Senior Republican operative who works closely on Senate races”: “He’s exactly what we don’t need,” the GOP operative said. “We need to drain the swamp.”
