200th Anniversary Of "The War Of 1812"
Alan: I marvel that Americans know so little about the War of 1812 - perhaps because the Brits' routed Washington D.C. so easily. Or perhaps our lack of interest in this war is due to unconscious embarrassment over Uncle Sam's ignominious attempt to seize Canada. The "acquisition of Canada," predicted former President Thomas Jefferson, "will be a mere matter of marching." Here are two good summaries; one from "The Week" -- http://theweek.com/article/index/231328/americas-invasion-of-canada-a-brief-history -- the other from Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_1812
