Utah teachers are allowed to carry concealed guns, parents not allowed to find out who's carrying

  • Utah public school teachers are now allowed to carry concealed guns. In fact, teachers wereeven offered free training:
During the Utah Education Association break Friday, the Utah Shooting Sports Council offered a free concealed weapons class structured specifically for teachers and others working within schools. The class involved discussion, demonstration and practice scenarios in safe gun use in school environments.
After the instruction, participants could pay a $49 fee and submit an application for a concealed carry permit to the Department of Public Safety.
One little class and a $49 fee and you're good to go in Utah. Never mind the fact concealed weapons have already caused shooting accidents in other schools. As a parent, you might be thinking—do I want my child in a classroom with a concealed handgun and a teacher that has had minimal training? Would you want to know if your child's teacher was packing heat? Some Utah parents in the Granite School District certainly do and they've recently discovered that the district isn't even allowed to ask which teachers are carrying:
"We assume and presume that a number of our teachers actually do carry weapons under conceal-carry permits," he said.
But, the districts do not know because the districts do not ask. While some parents want to know, public school districts in Utah do not have that kind of information.
"The state office has indicated that, frankly, under the interpretation of the law we can't ask," said Horsely. The State Office of Education confirmed: districts are not allowed to ask teachers whether they have a concealed weapons permit and whether they are carrying a weapon.
Judging by the video below, there are a lot of Utah teachers seeking the conceal-carry permits. Watch and tell us how you'd feel knowing a growing number of public school teachers are carrying concealed weapons in your child's school:
