Hillary's Most Effective Political Operative Is Ted Cruz

Dear Fred,

Thanks for your email.

Like Hillary, I could not be more delighted.

Now that Cruz is in the race, it is most likely he will do significant harm to his own party. http://www.politico.com/story/2015/03/ted-cruz-hillary-clintons-wrecking-ball-116342.html?ml=po

Jeb Bush is the only GOP candidate who comes close to having sufficient appeal to put up a real fight.

However, once Cruz habituates the GOP faithful -- and more particularly the mad hatter Tea Party -- to regular gobs of red meat, the Republican "middle" will drift far enough to the right (?!?) that, come mid-2016, "Pillsbury Dough Bush" won't be able to "get out the vote."

At the same time, I don't think American conservatives are ready for a "Made in Mexico" First Lady, the daughter of a migrant worker (who abandoned his family), and a woman with an irrepressible passion for jewlery that lends itself to lampoon.

In June 1999, Columba Bush was "briefly detained" at Atlanta's airport. She had declared $500 worth of merchandise on her US Customs form, but receipts indicated that she was carrying "$19,000 worth of clothing and jewelry". She continued to Tallahassee after using a personal check to pay a $4,100 fine.[14] A spokesman for the Bush family stated that she did not "answer truthfully at first because she did not want her husband to know how much she had spent".[15]

A year later, she spent $42,311.70 in one day on a handful of pieces of diamond jewelry including a $25,000 pair of platinum diamond stud earrings and a $10,500 bracelet.

Over 14 years, The Washington Post reports that Mrs.  Bush spent more than $90,000 at one jewelry store in Florida.

If I got caught bringing that much undeclared Mexican merchandise into the United States you can bet your booty I wouldn't have been "briefly detained." (I wouldn't be surprised if we soon learn that the magnitude of Columba's offense qualified as a felony.)

Yes, these "issues" are intrinsically trivial but Republicans -- especially the loons who comprise The Base -- are not only "rabidly white" but unusually prone to race-based resentment.

And so, with the Bush's not attractive enough to "turn out" The Base, Hillary -- by virtue of personal popularity and being "the odds on favorite" to become America's first woman president -- is likely to pick up several million votes that no other Democrat could garner.

Barring a significant terror attack on American soil, or sudden economic collapse -- when it looks like growth will soar to new heights -- I think the 2016 presidential contest will be a blowout with more than 5-6 million votes separating the two major candidates.

If the GOP continues to demonstrate its inability to govern -- despite significant majorities in both Houses -- or, at minimum, if it fails to quell to the internecine Civil War that Cruz just exacerbated, I think Hillary's coat tails could be very long indeed.

Then, by 2020, Texas, Florida, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Arizona will have migrated even farther from Red to Blue which will put The Party of Angry White Guys in serious cyclical trouble.

McLuhan pointed out that institutions often have their most florid growth just before sudden death, which, in a way, is to re-state the mechanism of "Last Gasp."

In its determination to oppose and obstruct rather than create and build, American conservatism is so dis-integrated that it may have to come completely undone before its component parts can be re-constituted into something vital.
