Alan: Thanks for posting your insight about "ISIS-panic." The essential truth of The Arab World is that Islamics are at war with themselves - a particularly self-destructive war at that. To suggest that this devastated "culture" - zealously tearing itself apart - represents a major threat to the United States is absurd. Such self-terrorization also signifies capitulation to the jihadi ethos of domination-through-fear. This is not to say there won't be intermittent terror attacks like 9-11, or, more to the point, terror attacks in the mold of al Qaeda's All-American template, Timothy McVeigh. However, a deeper truth is that we run greater risk of dying in an automobile accident than at the hands of jihadis. Imagine. 35,000 Americans die on the nation's roadways each year; 500,000 have been killed since 9/11. In fact, Americans die in traffic accidents at twice the rate of Europeans. Indeed, if Americans duplicated Europe's legal, regulatory, educational and cultural approach to traffic safety, 18,000 American lives would be spared each a year. And 20 times that number who, to a greater or lesser extent, will be disabled for the rest of their lives. To paraphrase a recent "Pax" post: "Do you know why we never hear about 18,000 preventable traffic fatalities but we get lathered over 7000 black-on-black killings?"
