The gunman who killed nine people last week at an Oregon college shot himself in front of his classmates after being wounded by two hero cops.
Also revealed on Wednesday was that Umpqua Community College shooter Christopher Harper-Mercer, 26, was discharged from the Army after attempting to commit suicide.
Harper-Mercer was discharged after one month of basic training at Fort Jackson, in South Carolina, in 2008.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the Army wouldn't disclose details of the 2008 suicide attempt but that it indicates Harper-Mercer was deeply troubled long before he opened fire on his classmates last Thursday.

The Army discharge did not affect Harper-Mercer's ability to obtain firearms legally.
Had Harper-Mercer received a dishonorable discharge which is deemed equal to a felony, he would have been prohibited from buying guns under federal law.
An official with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said last week that six guns were recovered from where the shooting took place, along with a steel-enhanced flak jacket and five magazines of ammunition.
The Wall Street Journal reports that eight more guns were found at an apartment Mr. Harper-Mercer shared with his mother, officials said.
Federal officials also said that the guns were purchased through a federally licensed firearms dealer by Mr. Harper-Mercer or his relatives.
Friends and neighbors described Harper-Mercer as being a loner with a fascination for guns and a classmate told Wall Street Journal that Harper Mercer once attended a school for troubled student and had a fascination with mass shootings.
Todd Spingath, an Air Force veteran, was one of the plain-clothed cops who took down the Oregon shooter
At a Wednesday news conference, authorities said that two police officers in plainclothes were the first to confront Harper-Mercer after he began shooting at his morning writing class.
'Once the shooter was wounded, he entered the classroom again, went to the front of the classroom and shot and killed himself,' said Douglas County District Attorney Rick Wesenberg.
One of last week's hero cops at the college was Detective Todd Spingath, 41, who is a United States Air Force veteran employed by the Roseburg Police Department for 16 years. He received the Medal of Valor for another shooting in Oregon in 2005.
He was with his partner Sgt Joe Kaney, 49, when they received the alert of gunfire in Umpqua Community College last week.
Within five minutes, they were at the scene to find Harper-Mercer waiting for them, firing bullets in their direction.
They fired three rounds back, wounding the 26-year-old who ran inside and shot himself.
As the nation reels and mourns the nine who were killed, Spingath and Kaney have been hailed as heroes as officials say their actions were key to preventing Harper-Mercer even more devastation.
In a news release praising their actions, DA Rick Wesenberg says: '
In the line of fire: Kaney and another officer (not pictured) responded to Umpqua Community College Thursday within minutes of the beginning of the rampage and engaged the gunman
'I am very proud of how Sergeant Joe Kaney and Detective Todd Spingath, as well as all public safety organizations responded and conducted themselves during this ordeal.
'I, like many other people in this community, consider them to be heroes - they knew that they could be injured or killed during this confrontation as they ran toward the sound of gunfire.
'I have spoken with both officers and I can tell you they do not want to heralded as heroes - they feel they are only first responders who got there first and did a job they were trained and entrusted to do.'
Kaney is a former Marine who has been employed by the Roseburg Police Department for 23 years.
Public recognition: Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin praised two Roseburg, Oregon, cops for taking down the college shooter. It is believed one of the officers was Sgt Joe Kaney
He also received a Medal of Honor for the 2005 shooting, as well as a and Purple Heart from the Oregon Peace Officer Association as he was hit.
The 49-year-old has declined to speak about his role in the dramatic events on the college campus Thursday, but his wife, Dayna, could not conceal her pride when asked by the paper about her husband’s involvement.
'Well, of course he's a hero,' Mr Kaney told the Daily News.
Mrs Kaney, a nurse, said she was happy her husband came home safe after responding to the shooting.
Harper-Mercer shot dead at least nine people and wounded seven others when he barged into Snyder Hall armed with three pistols and a rifle and opened fire at around 10.40am Thursday.
According to survivors, Harper-Mercer shot a teacher from a point-blank range, then forced students to lie on the floor and then asked them to stand up one by one.

Chaotic scene: A police radio recording captured one of the breathless officers saying they were exchanging shots with Mercer, before he radioed back later to say: 'Suspect down'

He then asked the victims to state their religion before shooting them.
Within minutes, two responding officers, one of them believed to be Sgt Kaney, ran into the science building and confronted the shooter.
Recordings taken from police radio at the scene of the shootings reveal how the event played out until the officers arrived.
In some of the first communications from this morning, dispatchers can be heard talking about an 'active shooter' on the UCC campus, discussing one woman who had been reported as shot.
They then narrow down the shooter's location to Synder Hall, saying he is outside the classroom firing in and requesting medical aid.

Moments later the cops first come on to the radio to report that they have found the shooter.
Speaking to the dispatchers, a breathless officer says: 'We are exchanging shots with him.

The officer, who sounds out of breath, then calls back to say there is an unconfirmed report that the suspect has a 'long gun' - meaning either a rifle or a shotgun.
Police have since revealed that Mercer had an AR-style assault rifle, along with three handguns.
After a short lapse in communication, the officer radios back, shouting down the line that the 'suspect is down'.
Having neutralized the threat, likely saving dozens of lives in the process, the officers then turn their attention to the wounded.

He says: '[We need] multiple medical units. Suspect is down, we have multiple gunshot wounds, we are going to need multiple ambulances on scene.
Sheriff Hanlin refused to reveal the officers' identities, but said they would be issued by another department at a later date.
'We know that we have at least two heroic officers who exchanged gunfire with the suspect,' he told reporters. ullscreen
Speaking to the Daily News, a friend of Sgt Kaney's said he and wife Dayna spent Thursday night watching a movie together to help get his mind off the tragic events of that morning.
According to the City of Roseburg website, Kaney heads the local police department’s Criminal investigation Division.
An article in the News-Review from 2014 mentioned that the detective wrote the department's body camera policy.
