Given Conservatives' Fondness For "The End Justifies The Means," Note That Legal Abortion...

Abortion Rates Reach Historic Lows In Developed Countries (Where Abortion Is Legal)

GOP Platform Doubles Down On NO ABORTION EVER. Methinks They Protest Too Much

Alan: Given conservatives' fondness for the moral principle that "The End Justifies The Means" -- as witnessed in Uncle Sam's use of torture; the legalization of killing when citizens "feels threatened"; the pre-emptive exclusion of Muslims from entering the United States; and Bush-Cheney's rush-to-war in Iraq -- it bears mention that in those countries where abortion is legal, the per capita of abortion is far less than in those countries where abortion is outlawed.

It seems that anti-abortion forces are more interested in salving their own consciences than in minimizing the number of abortions.

Whatever the reason (or lack of reason) for their choice to insure more dead fetuses, the opponents of legal abortion are morally responsible for the higher pile of dead fetuses in those societies that outlaw abortion as opposed to those societies in which abortion is legal and accessible.

The proof is in the pudding. And the pudding concocted by holier-than-thou absolutists who make it their business to oppose legal abortion is blood red.

It is NOT true -- as Christian conservatives would have us believe -- that legal abortion makes abortion more frequent.

Rather, the option of having a legal abortion -- always individual choice whether abortion is legal or illegal -- is a choice made much less often in those societies where abortion is legal and available.

I wish it were "needless to say..."

But, to shed light on the deliberately benighted, it is also true that abortion is an individual choice that is made far more frequently in those societies where abortion is outlawed.

Here is the upshot...

Those who want "the stack of aborted fetuses" to be as low as possible will support legal abortion.

And those who are content to "feel good about their proscriptive moral absolutsm" -- while watching that same stack of aborted fetuses grow ever higher -- will oppose legal abortion.

I see this issue as one of many issues that fall under the rubric of "rendering unto Caesar what is Caesar's" -- a biblical injunction which apparently has NO meaning at all for Christian conservatives. (The Christian conservative approach to taxation is clearly opposed to giving actual coins to the civil authorities according to the bible account of Jesus telling people to give coins not only to the government but to the Roman occupying army which would soon use Jewish taxes to destroy The Temple and incite those same Romans to hound the entire Jewish people into the Diaspora

The overwhelming number of Americans who support abortion do not stand outside abortion clinics waving poms poms.

However, the cold truth is this: If you support abortion when Willie Horton rape-impregnates your 12 year old daughter, you must, at minimum, agree that other people-of-conscience can draw the line elsewhere. For once "you" draw the line "somewhere" (and feel justified in doing so) everyone else gets to decide where that same line will be drawn.

So...

What will it be?

Will you oppose legal abortion (which "comes with the package" of sex education and contraceptive availability), and thus stack the fetal corpses ever higher?

Or will you support legal-abortion-sex-education-contraceptive-availability and thus keep the stack of corpses as low as possible?

And -- according to the trend line of the last 20 years -- will you help that stack become lower still?

Remarkably, it appears that within the last year, America is now witness to fewer abortions than there were on the eve of Rowe v. Wade becoming the law of the land.

Moral absolutism is the breeding ground for humankind's worst evils.

"The terrible thing about our time is precisely the ease with which theories can be put into practice.  The more perfect, the more idealistic the theories, the more dreadful is their realization.  We are at last beginning to rediscover what perhaps men knew better in very ancient times, in primitive times before utopias were thought of: that liberty is bound up with imperfection, and that limitations, imperfections, errors are not only unavoidable but also salutary. The best is not the ideal.  Where what is theoretically best is imposed on everyone as the norm, then there is no longer any room even to be good.  The best, imposed as a norm, becomes evil.”
