Life -- including political life -- has always been a struggle.

I think World War II (which was, in my view, an extension of World War I) was so horrible -- what with gas warfare in World War I and the Atomic Bomb (cum Holocaust) in World War -- that Americans got "sick of war" during the post-war period, that charmed era in which you and I grew up.

It is an inconvenient truth that we humans are contentious cusses -- and that orneriness coupled with the atavistic appeal of simian chest-thumping -- have finally made us grumpy with peace.

Homo sapiens needs an enemy.

As I see it, humankind's obvious enemies are disease, poverty and, more recently, global warming.

Although it is true that scientifically oriented people get excited by battling humankind's common enemies, the dimwits -- and they are legion -- need to smell blood in the air, and burnt flesh on the wind.

Young bucks everywhere imagine war as a glorious, idealistic thing .

And old bucks everywhere are eager to take advantage of the young dumbfucks.

Your email mentions the failure of the educational system.

It's not so much failure of the educational system as failure of families (whom Cowboy Capitalism has converted from Citizenship to Consumerism) to inculcate passion for deep learning. One can argue that this "family failure" may be a failure of education but I do not see religious authorities teaching "the faithful" that it is a "sin" not to revere Science and Learning. 

Church authorities are too busy enhancing their power-over-the-collection-plate by making people afraid of God's bottom-line terrorization - Armageddon in this life, and Hell in the next.

Trump has seized power because Americans have NEVER been so contemptuous of Truth as they are now, evangelizing pigheaded ignorance with more zeal than Trump grabbing pussy. 

As recently as The Greatest Generation - my maternal grandfather among them - blue collar workers deferred to the knowledgability of "The Learned." 

But now blue collar workers are contemptuous of learning, and - by extension - they're contemptuous of expertise. 

For the first 12 months of his "administration" Trump did not even have a "Science Advisor" - and when SOBMF finally chose one, he selected a 31 year old with a degree in political science. WTF!?!?!

22% of millenials never heard of the holocaust. Add that to the nay sayers and the self absorbed social media generation and its no wonder  white nationalism or fascism or any of the isms of that time don't  scare this country like it once did.
