Donald Trump Calls for 'Total and Complete Shutdown' of Muslims Entering the US
In a statement released today, Republican candidate Donald Trump called for a "total and complete shutdown" of Muslims entering the United States until "our country's representatives can figure out what is going on."
"Mr. Trump stated, 'Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension. Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine. Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life.'" the statement read.
Trump tweeted shortly after releasing his statement:
When asked which Muslims would be banned from entering, Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowki told ABC News’ Tom Llamas "the ban applies to everyone."
The Republican presidential candidate will be holding a “Pearl Harbor Day rally” later today aboard the USS Yorktown in South Carolina.
Democratic presidential candidate Martin O’Malley has been quick to jump on Trump’s statement, tweeting that Trump is running for office as a “fascist demagogue.”
Following the November terrorist attacks on Paris and the San Bernardino shootings last week, Trump argued that the United States should monitor mosques and families of terrorists. In an interview with CBS that aired Sunday, Trump said the nation is too politically correct in regard to Muslims and that the shootings in San Bernardino could have been prevented if the United States profiled Muslims.
“If they thought there was something wrong with that group and they saw what was happening, and they didn't want to call the police because they didn't want to be profiling, I think that's pretty bad,” Trump responded when asked whether there should be profiling. “People are dead. A lot of people are dead right now. So, everybody wants to be politically correct. And that's part of the problem that we have with our country. Trump’s calling for “totally and complete shutdown” of Muslim “immigration” isn’t the first time he has singled out a group of people.
Last month, Trump told ABC's Barbara Walters he would ban all Syrian refugees from entering the United States.
In a speech when he announced his candidacy for president, he began by comparing Mexican immigrants to “rapists."
“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us,” Trump said. “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
