In an effort to defuse the controversy, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said Davis was one of the “several dozen” individuals invited by the Vatican ambassador to meet with the pope during histrip to the United States capital.
Grassi added that the pontiff taught him literature and psychology classes at Inmaculada Concepcion high school in Sante Fe, Argentina, from 1964-1965.
“That was me”, Grassi told CNN.
Rosica said that Vatican staff were not sure the pope “knew fully each of the people he was meeting” while greeting people at the nunciature.
A video posted to YouTube appeared to show the Pope embracing and conversing with Grassi in Spanish, before Grassi introduced him to the others present, according to the AP.
Mr Grassi said Pope Francis was “one of the greatest teachers I’ve ever had, and mentor”.
“Obviously, I think that somebody who preaches for integration and who’s so into loving each other, and knowing that this lady was somebody for personal reasons did not want to issue marriage licenses to gay people, he wouldn’t be happy with that, absolutely not”. “He has never said anything negative”.
Earlier today, the Vatican issued a statement, contrary to earlier insistence that there would be no further comment, distancing the pope from the formerly jailed Kentucky Clerk.
Davis, a Rowan County, Kentucky clerk, spent five days in jail for defying a series of federal court orders to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
Asked whether he thought the pope was intentionally set up by someone in the embassy, Rosica said he doubted that was the case saying: “No, reading all of the information, listening to all of the facts, these things happen”.
The Vatican also revealed that the Pope met with a gay couple and their friends while in the US when denouncing Davis’s views as also being those of the Popes.
Grassi, who was once a student of Pope Francis, contends the pope knew he was gay for a long time and never judged his same-sex relationship.
Francis firmly upholds church teaching that marriage is between a man and woman, but he did not focus on the debate over same-sex marriage during his visit, at one point telling the USA bishops to avoid “harsh and divisive” language despite the challenges they face in society.
“Pope Francis never ceases to surprise us”.
The spokesman answered questions about the meeting with Davis during an October. 2 press briefing for the upcoming synod on the family, saying, “I don’t have anything else to add at this moment."
