Kasturi Munirathinam, an Indian domestic worker living in Riyadh, ended up in the hospital after her right hand was allegedly chopped off by her employer.
She had been working for a family in the Saudi Arabian capital for three months, and has repeatedly reported mistreatment to her family back in Chennai, India. When her employer learned that Munirathinam had taken her complaints to the authorities, the woman of the house allegedly severed her right hand, the Times of India reports.
Munirathinam arrived in the hospital in critical condition, but she has since stabilized.
“Ever since she went to work with this family in July, things were not alright,” her son, Mohan, told BBC Hindi. “My mother was not even allowed to speak to us over the phone, she was not given proper food and was forced to work long hours.”
A video that has surfaced on social media shows Munirathinam in the hospital in tears as she recalls the attack.
“I pleaded with the woman not to harm me, but she kicked me, punched me and cut off my arm,” she cried. “I want to go back home. Please help me.”
Indian officials have responded with anger to the alleged attack. Sushma Swaraj, the country’s minster of external affairs, tweeted her vexation late Thursday night.
Because of the brutal nature of the crime, Indian diplomats in Saudi Arabia told the Times of India, the investigation will be handled by the General Intelligence Directorate (Al Mukhabarat Al A’amah), the country’s principal intelligence agency.
Munirathinam’s sister, Vijayakumari, told The Indian Express that Munirathinam has four children and is married to a farm worker.
“She was forced to take up the job abroad as the family was facing financial problems after the marriage of her three daughters,” Vijayakumari said.
