Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took aim at former GOP nominee John McCain Saturday at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa .
McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona, this week criticized Trump’s rhetoric on immigration, saying that the businessman at a recent rally in Phoenix had “fired up the crazies.”
Trump on Saturday shot back, saying “(McCain’s) a war hero because he got captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
McCain, a U.S Navy pilot, was a prisoner of war for nearly 6 years in Vietnam after being shot down flying a mission.
At a news conference following his remarks, Trump did not apologize for his comments, according to the Associated Press. He did offer this clarification: “If a person is captured, they’re a hero as far as I’m concerned. I don’t like the job John McCain is doing in the Senate because he is not taking care of our veterans.”
