As a victim of mugging, I have personal reason to deplore this brutal behavior.

Yes. In addition to needed change in police culture, "black culture should change."

In racially diverse societies however, the dominant race always makes scapegoats of minorities. 

Such scapegoating is facilitated by the dominant ethnicity's "built-in advantages" which, in turn, infuse the disadvantaged with frustration and anger.

Furthermore, dominant ethnicities experience much less temptation to perpetrate "personal crime" like mugging and burglary and much more temptation to participate in "institutional crime" like Wall Street malfeasance and mass murder events like Vietnam (recall Mai Lai) and the preposterous Iraq War.

Your email reminds me that Cowboy Capitalism is a major culprit "on both sides" of "the cultural divide," transforming formerly responsible citizens into self-seeking "consumer units." 

Viewed head on, un-socialized Capitalism is a 24/7 advertisement for The Seven Deadly Sins - with the single exception that predatory capitalists do not exhibit sloth.

Envy, greed and lust however (coupled with promotion of pride and anger by The Military Industrial Complex) are foundational to Cowboy Capitalism whose purpose is to "sell" as much "stuff" as possible, expanding commercial opportunity through market metastasis driven by greed.

 In effect, Cowboy Capitalism has re-defined newly-created "wants" as sine qua non "needs" with the predictable consequence of moral calamity.

The wantonness that arises from this re-definition is fundamentally putrescent, imbued with sufficient destructive force to collapse American society. 

Here is Merriam Webster's definition of "wantonness" - the end result of "want":

Although it begs a separate essay, it is true that your email has fundamentally refocused me on the bedrock need for every human to take pride in the development of a productive/creative skill set in order to escape the bondage of envy and greed as lockstep components of idolatrous consumerism.

 The linchpin heresy that Cowboy Capitalism has loosed on the world is that "price" can replace "value" - and the corresponding belief that "purchased pleasures" are adequate substitutes for joy. 

 The capitalist delusion that pleasure can replace joy is close kin to the belief that a prostitute's services can replace a loving spouse.

 Because conservatives despise fundamental change, they are constitutionally incapable of contemplating the diabolical corruption wrought by un-socialized Capitalism, an economic engine that has become cornerstone to The American Way and therefore - in the minds of conservatives - is a "tradition" that must be defended just because it's a tradition.

 Although Pope Francis is right to say that no social or political problem will be solved until we "attack the structural causes of inequality and the absolute autonomy of markets," it is also essential that people be taught the futility of consumerist acquisition which must be replaced by the essential satisfaction of "having a life" based on the mastery of productive skills, coupled with awareness that artistic creativity is indispensable to an abundant life.

Gandhi pointed out that God would not dare appear to a starving person except in the form of bread.

 If we are serious about fostering change in black culture, we must first insure that our fellows are not only fed but inspired to escape the dimwit passivity of consumerism through art, artisanry and the realization of one's God-given gifts.

He was leaving the library in Durham and crossed the street to Mission to play some music....4 punks got him in broad daylight and worked him over, broke his guitar probably on him. Fortunately there were cops close by and saw. They arrested two and are still looking for the others. First time they took his guitar and pawned it....police got it back...not this time. He carries it out of the case and I warned him about that.
We'll see what develops...I remember yours. Blacks want the police culture to change, I think their culture should change too. Ciao
