Lyndon Baines Johnson And Everett Dirksen: A Model Of Civil Discourse

Pork Lips Now!
Dear Fred,

American absolutism is the cornerstone of civility's collapse.

This rancorous resistance to change is "the new thing" under the sun.

Not only do absolutists detest compromise, they cannot compromise.

In the view of "the religiously bedazzled," existentially shackled to their impossibly pure principles, compromise betrays both God and Country.

In the last 25 years, American conservatives have experienced an appalling epiphany: despite their most diligent efforts to champion The Past, America's political process incorporates ever more of the liberal "agenda."

Recognizing their inevitable "loss," American absolutists now embrace apocalypticism, hoping -- consciously or unconsciously -- that if they destroy the American system of governance, they will simultaneously devolve the nation to a prior "century." Back when men were men, women were women and a smoking six shooter was the measure of justice.

"Republicans For Revolution," A Study In Anarchic Apocalypticism

Although this devolution (a handy antipode to evolution) may not alter the eventual triumph of liberalism, these anarchists will at least "enjoy" an additional century in proximity to whatever "Golden Age" they fancy.

Never mind that "the good old days" were not the good old days.

To quote from a recent post: "You needn't reach farther back than "living memory" to find grinding poverty from sea-to-shining-sea; legions of destitute seniors; multitudes of women trapped in brutal and brutalizing marriages; almost no specific cure for any human ailment; normalized racism replete with lynching and KKK terror tactics; horrible workplace conditions; 12-16 hour work days; grotesque child labor practices; no "weekend" and almost no Middle Class.  Wall Street magnates ruled the roost and, unable to see beyond the coddled condition of their own kind, promoted an "Official Story" ignoring The Great Depression they were already engineering. (The Great Recession reprized this same plutocratic ignorance. http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2011/10/daily-dose-october-152011.html)

Pax on both houses,

Alan
