The US "Southwest" Was Stolen From Mexico

Dear Fred,

I think that "living memory" is the key to any territorial restoration or "right of return."

Of course, you cannot "run out the clock" on this.

Once a formal grievance has been lodged (within an aggrieved party's "living memory") that grievance remains "alive" until properly adjudicated - perhaps by an international court tasked with these suits.

By these terms Mexico does not have any legal right to redressing Uncle Sam's conquest of their sovereign territory.

However, in this world there is both justice - and poetic justice.

Mexicans are more poetic than we green-gos and so it is fitting and right that they are getting their land back by de facto rulings of poetic justice.

Pax on both houses,

Alan

Then how would Canada give Quebec back to the people of France? It was taken in what we call the French and Indian War -- by deception, because the British soldiers snuck up the hill under cover of night to seize the Citadel.
Quebec belongs to France -- and the people of Canada can then re-apply for independence.
Except France would have to give it all back to the various Iroquois and Mohawk tribes, and then a serious investigation might be made of which tribe owned how much for how long and which tribe got where first in order to truly arrive at the original inhabitants who are the true owners -- that is, if you accept the premise of first-come first-served. and Finders Keepers.
This is a widely accepted but scarcely examined premise. What special right to the original inhabitants have?

Dear Fred,

Thanks for your email.

The Mexican government tried to accommodate American settlers by permitting their legal residence on Mexican soil in exchange for converting to Catholicism and not subscribing to slavery.

It was essentially deceptive for Americans to take up residence without any intention to adhere to either condition.

In any event, Mexicans are re-appropriating their land and I see considerable justice in this re-appropriation.

Pax tecum

I should think the right word is "conquer"
We did it in broad daylight and not by deception.
We won the war.
"stealing" sounds sneaky. It wasn't sneaky at all.
Well, we all have grievances, personal and larger.
