There Are Two Kinds Of People... But What If Two Entirely Different Epistemologies Are "Built-In?"

Alan: America's ideological chasm is flanked by two epistemological "types."

Notably, both "types" are certain they're right.

Recently, an "internet sensation" whirled around an audio recording that "spoke" differently to two American "camps": those who swore the speaker said "Laurel" and those who swore the speaker said "Yanny."

Love To Hate Cilantro?
It's In Your Genes And, Maybe, In Your Head

What ought we do when "two sides" actually perceive "the data" differently? ... when the physical structure of their senses forces them to swear by antipodal "certainties."

"Absolutists" argue that their "true believer status" justifies (and often "divinely ordains") that they condemn "faithless others" as infidels.

The essential litmus for "absolutists" is always black and white... either/or, good/bad, heaven/hell. (In the threeAbrahamic traditions, believers get to damn whatever two they choose, then fantasize - or enact - their slaughter.)

"Relativists," on the other hand, also believe the evidence of their own senses but do not damn "the infidel others" to Hell.

When an epistemological debate forces absolutists to perceive a self-evidently divergent chasm between Truth and Falsehood, they cling to their "indisputable" rightness in ways that deny others "the existential approval of God Himself," or they discard evidence that has replicable sensory validity, reaching their customary conclusion that "The Other" can be ignored or even eliminated.

After all, if God Himself plans to roast "The Others" for all eternity, why not begin the Holocaust here and now?

We all share an inconvenient truthtwo intrinsically: there are different sensory "hinges" by which people evaluate  Truth -- i.e., do you hear "Laurel" or "Yanny?" -- so that, often, our ideological-and-faithful convictions are based on evidence from two radically different sensoria.

It is no longer "You say potayto and I say potahto."

Rather, an entirely different conundrum emerges: the statement that "cilantro is intrinsically delightful," is met by other people -- ALSO OBEYING THE EVIDENCE OF THEIR SENSES -- who swear (with their personal salvation in the lurch) that "cilantro is intrinsically repulsive."

"Conservatives Scare More Easily Than Liberals"

I am not arguing here that people have the right to deliberately dwell in "darkness" without bestirring themselves to learn the Scientific Method and to intellectual rigor is used to discern scientific truth.

However, when "the benighted" do indulge ignorant "bliss," they propagate ignorance in ways that damage the underpinnings of intellectual rigor and scientific epistemology.

With civilization in the balance, "intellectual rigor" and "scientific epistemology" are all we've got my friends.

No matter what claims might be proven for "religious faith," in the absence of intellectually rigorous scientific findings, we will - as night follows day - revert to a world where superstition (and its interlocking set of "alternative facts" and "preemptory absolutist opinions") plunge us into a psycho-spiritual swamp from which humankind's emergence will be as slow as the Western World's progression from The Dark Ages to The Renaissance - and, by extension, The European Enlightenment.
