If humankind would overcome the destructive pull of entropy -- that persistent impulse to disorder which manifests at the fundamental level of energy exchange (and at most derivative levels as well) -- then "collective enterprise" "must" be honored as more important than individuals' working in isolation.
Although individuals play a crucial role in human development, the species must finally remain subsidiary to collective enterprise just as scientists themselves work within collective enterprise - and not only collective enterprise but collective enterprise that is trans-generational.
