GM CEO, Mary Barra
Why are 13 people dead?
"A pattern of incompetence."
Alan: Dozens of GM employees could have "come forward" (over a period of many years) to correct the design flaw that killed 13 Americans. To provide perspective, there were four American fatalities in the Benghazi embassy raid. Don't expect American conservatives to jeopardize Capitalism's carte blanche with a sustained hue and cry. Rather, expect American conservatives to "take Benghazi to their graves" because, as they see "the unforgivable sin," the Obama administration should have done more to prevent those deaths. By my lights there is no substantive difference between the two set of circumstances except that GM is more culpable for not taking measures known to be necessary, whereas Ambassador Stevens trip to Benghazi was an "outing." Stevens was based in Tripoli where security has always proven sufficient. But in this one ill-fated instance, he made a side trip to a "backwater" embassy and, tragically, four Americans lost their lives. Notably, Stevens parents do not blame the Obama administration.

"This is a test of our character and our values. In the end, I’m not afraid of the truth, and I know you aren’t either. I want it known that we will face up to our mistakes and take them head on. The fact is I believe in this company and I believe in you."
