Generally, I agree with your assessment.

What's different about the Navy Yard killings is that they demonstrate the futility and stupidity of turning schools - and every goddam elsewhere - into armed camps.

You see, not even "high-end" armed camps can control violence.

If the United States Navy can not protect itself against gun violence within a "totally controlled environment", then it may be time -- finally -- to look at America's irrepressible culture of firearm violence as The Problem rather than the solution.

Ironically, the purported solution exacerbates the problem.

Sure, there may be a temporary descent into increased violence if we put meaningful gun control measures in place ... although, blessedly, Australia's imposition of tight gun controls in reaction to the Port Arthur Massacre argues against any such increase. In any event, inflamming America's armed camp mentality (when we are already a nation devoted to "perpetual warfare"), by upping the ante in futile hopes of preventing violence is, as George Carlin put it, "like fucking to protect virginity."

I fear the national security state as much as I fear the Tea Party.  They have this shooting in the Navy Yard and then they go into lockdown....... My very first reaction to the September 11 disaster was "there's going to be cops everywhere."

The bomber struck the Boston Marathon, they put the whole city in lockdown and I'm glad i wasn't there. because I would have defied it, and then got arrested.

So when the shooters strike, I fear the cops will come in armored vehicles, SWAT teams and it will be bad.
