Except for "pockets" in California and Washington, poverty is co-terminous with The Red States.
In turn, red states coincide with The Bible Belt.
Furthermore, ALL of the worst poverty is in states that vote Republican.
The Red States don't vote Republican because they're prosperous, but because they're poor.
And "the poor" tend to be so frightened of life that they reflexively worship what they don't have but cravenly want.
In the process, "the poor" contribute disproportionately to the ongoing consolidation of American plutocracy - and, in the process, slit their own throats.
If a person or a community really wants to be prosperous (as distinct from being "wealth-idolatrous") then develop a liberal culture like those found in "blue states."
A cultural cornerstone of prosperity (except in places where extractive industries prevail) is high quality, liberal education.
Alternatively, poverty and plutocracy are intimately bound with ignorance and lack of academic accomplishment.
(This is not to say that academic accomplishment is better than "vocational" accomplishment. Both are equally honorable, although, in general, the more you know the more you contribute to The Common Good.)
