Alan: America's religiously-based passion for punishment is "what's wrong with America."

Most uneducated Americans must believe in punishment because if they don't, they lose faith in God - or at least faith in their understanding of how "the universe" is ordered.

Although it is rarely thought through, from the viewpoint of a conservative Christian, it is better to have the brutal God they were brought up with than no God at all.

It is not hard to understand that punishment rarely teaches a lesson worth learning.

Next time you're in a public place and a mother (or father) starts whupping their kid, look closely and you will see that the child is being damaged, not edified.

Typically, punishment is administered by brutalized people brutalizing people who have already been brutalized.

Etcetera. Ad infinitum.

Or, until the circle is broken.

Alan: Most devout Christians will read the above passage from Deuteronomy and - consciously or unconsciously - they will argue that this command was rooted in the Old Covenant before humankind, in its brutishness, was able to accept the New Covenant "light of Christ."

I say that no God worthy of respect would ever command the slaughter of children for the "sin" of rebelliousness.

Nor would any God worthy of respect oblige EVERY male in the community to participate in the slaughter of rebellious children.
