Former First Lady Laura Bush suggested she may vote for Hillary Clinton in the general election, if the former secretary of state secures the Democratic presidential nomination.
In comments published over the weekend in The Telegraph, the wife of former Republican President George W. Bush dropped a handful of not-so-subtle hints that she could support her fellow former first lady over Donald Trump, if he were to secure the Republican nomination.
“I want our next president — whoever he or she might be — to be somebody who is interested in women in Afghanistan and who will continue U.S. policies… that we continue to do what we’re committed to do as a country,” she said at a “Women in the World” summit Friday.
“That’s who I want — or the kind of people that will do that and will pay attention to our history, and know what’s happened before and know specifically how we can continue to do the good things that we do around the world.”
“I understand that Americans are angry and frustrated but we do not need someone in the Oval Office who mirrors and inflames our anger and frustration,” she added — a comment many took to be a thinly-veiled criticism of GOP front-runner Donald Trump.
Bush, who was a registered Democrat before she married into the Bush family, did not single out Clinton by name. But, Trump along with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, have both said, they do not envision a role for the U.S. in Afghanistan beyond fighting terrorism.
